Enforcement
The Commission made public three closed cases, as follows. For more information, see the case documents in the Enforcement Query System.
MUR 7066
- COMPLAINANT: Rebecca Neufeld
- RESPONDENT: Hillary for America and Jose Villarreal, in his official capacity as treasurer (the Committee)
- SUBJECT: The complaint alleged that the Committee accepted excessive contributions. Hillary for America was the principal campaign committee for 2016 Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.
- DISPOSITION: Given the limited scope of the violation, the small amount at issue and the Committee’s remedial actions, the Commission exercised its prosecutorial discretion and dismissed the matter in consideration of Commission priorities.
MURs 7045 and 7047
- COMPLAINANTS: Marie Siebert and Mavis Busiek
- RESPONDENTS: Matthew Canovi and Canovi for Congress and Cary Wells, in his official capacity as treasurer (the Committee)
- SUBJECT: The complaints alleged that the Committee’s website and campaign literature lacked disclaimers. Canovi appeared on the ballot for the 2016 primary election for Missouri’s 7th Congressional District, though he did not file a Statement of Candidacy and the Committee did not file a Statement of Organization with the Commission.
- DISPOSITION: Given the Committee’s remedial action and the unlikeliness that the general public would have been misled as to who was responsible for the campaign literature or the website, the Commission exercised its prosecutorial discretion and
dismissed the matter in consideration of Commission priorities.
