Contribution limits in special elections

March 7, 2022

Limits on contributions to candidates apply separately to each federal election in which the candidate participates. A primary election, general election, runoff election and special election are each considered a separate election with a separate limit. When reporting contributions made in connection with a special election, be sure to check the appropriate box for type of election, and indicate that it is a special election (e.g., “2022 special primary,” “2022 special general,” or “2022 special runoff,” as appropriate, in the cases of current special elections).
