FEC TAKES FINAL ACTION ON TWO MATTERS

WASHINGTON -- The Federal Election Commission has made public its final action on two matters under review (MURs). The Commission found no reason to believe violations occurred in either case.

Under the law, the FEC must attempt to resolve its enforcement cases, or MURs, through a confidential investigative process that may lead to a negotiated conciliation agreement between the Commission and the individual or group. MUR 6033  

RESPONDENTS:

Ohio Bankers League; Daniel Conklin; Stivers for Congress and Wade Steen in his official capacity as treasurer

COMPLAINANT:

Ohio Democratic Party

SUBJECT:

The complaint alleged that the Ohio Bankers League solicited prohibited earmarked contributions for the Stivers for Congress Committee.

OUTCOME:

The Commission found no reason to believe that a violation occurred and closed the file.


MUR 6035

RESPONDENTS:

Northern Trust Company; Barack Obama; Obama 2010, Inc. and Harvey S. Wineberg in his official capacity as treasurer; Obama for Illinois, Inc. and Harvey S. Wineberg in his official capacity as treasurer (terminated)

COMPLAINANT:

SUBJECT:

The complaint alleged that then-Senator Obama and his wife Michelle obtained a mortgage from Northern Trust Company at a discounted interest rate, resulting in a campaign contribution. It further alleged that the discounted rate was a prohibited corporate contribution and that neither the Obama campaign committees nor Northern Trust reported such a contribution.

OUTCOME:

The Commission found no reason to believe that the loan was made contrary to applicable law or outside the ordinary course of business, and no reason to believe that it was a prohibited corporate contribution. The Commission closed the file.

  The Federal Election Commission (FEC) is an independent regulatory agency that administers and enforces federal campaign finance laws. The FEC has jurisdiction over the financing of campaigns for the U.S. House, the U.S. Senate, the Presidency and the Vice Presidency. Established in 1975, the FEC is composed of six Commissioners who are nominated by the President and confirmed by the U.S. Senate.
