Primary elections trigger additional reporting for some filers

Campaigns must file a pre-election report 12 days before the candidate’s primary and may need to file additional 48-hour notices of last-minute contributions. For example, candidates running in the March 3 primaries in Alabama, Arkansas, California, North Carolina and Texas must file a pre-primary report, due February 20. Additionally, those campaigns must file 48-hour notices for all contributions (including loans) of $1,000 or more received between February 13 and February 29 (i.e., less than 20 days but more than 48 hours before the election). These notices must be filed within 48 hours of the committee’s receipt of the contribution(s).

Quarterly-filing PACs and party committees must file a pre-primary report if they make previously undisclosed contributions or expenditures in connection with an election by the close of books for the report.
