Shana M. Broussard becomes Chair of the Commission
WASHINGTON—Today, Commissioner Shana M. Broussard began serving as Chair of the Federal Election Commission for the remainder of 2025. The Commission voted to elect Commissioner Broussard as Chair at its open meeting of April 30, with an effective date of July 1. James E. “Trey” Trainor, III, previously the Acting Chairman, will continue to serve as Vice Chairman of the Commission for 2025.
Chair Broussard was nominated to serve as Commissioner by President Donald J. Trump. She was confirmed by the United States Senate by a vote of 92-4 and took her seat on the Commission in December 2020. She previously served as Chair of the Commission in 2021.
Chair Broussard served as Counsel for Commissioner Steven T. Walther, advising the Commissioner from 2015 until her own appointment as Commissioner. She first joined the Commission in 2008 as an attorney in the Enforcement Division of the Office of General Counsel. Chair Broussard previously was an Attorney Advisor at the Internal Revenue Service, Office of Professional Responsibility, and Deputy Disciplinary Counsel at the Louisiana Attorney Disciplinary Board. She also worked as a New Orleans Assistant District Attorney and was appointed in that role to the Violent Offenders Strike Force. Commissioner Broussard earned her B.A. from Dillard University and her J.D. cum laude from Southern University Law Center.
The Federal Election Commission (FEC) is an independent regulatory agency that administers and enforces federal campaign finance laws. The FEC has jurisdiction over the financing of campaigns for the U.S. House of Representatives, the U.S. Senate, the Presidency and the Vice Presidency. Established in 1975, the FEC is composed of six Commissioners who are nominated by the President and confirmed by the U.S. Senate.
