FEC APPROVES ADVISORY OPINION ON INDEPENDENT EXPENDITURES
WASHINGTON – At its open meeting today, the Federal Election Commission issued an advisory opinion requested by The True Patriot Network, LLC. In Advisory Opinion 2009-02, the Commission concluded that The True Patriot Network, LLC, may make independent expenditures, subject to the limitations and disclosure requirements that apply to individuals. The True Patriot Network is a single person LLC that is not treated as a corporation for tax purposes. The Commission determined that there is no material difference between expenditures made by Nicolas Hanauer, the sole member, manager and funder of the company, and expenditures made by The True Patriot Network, LLC. The company plans to expand its activities to include communications that influence Federal elections. The Federal Election Commission (FEC) is an independent regulatory agency that administers and enforces federal campaign finance laws. The FEC has jurisdiction over the financing of campaigns for the U.S. House of Representatives, the U.S. Senate, the Presidency and the Vice Presidency.
