Gaining multicandidate status

May 3, 2021

A multicandidate committee is a political committee that has been registered with the FEC for at least six months, has received contributions from more than 50 persons, and has made contributions to at least 5 federal candidates. Once a committee qualifies as a multicandidate committee, it must file Form 1M within 10 days. Once a committee has filed Form 1M, there is no need to refile the form in any subsequent calendar year. Multicandidate committees may contribute up to $5,000 per candidate, per election. When making contributions to candidates, a multicandidate committee must provide written notification to the recipient committee that the committee is a multicandidate committee. For convenience, the statement may be pre-printed on the committee’s checks, letterhead or other appropriate materials.
