The three-step process for handling questionable contributions

October 31, 2017

In the course of their fundraising activities, candidates and committees occasionally receive contributions of questionable legality. Whether it’s a check from a business that might be incorporated or from an individual who lives outside the US, the three-step process for handling the contribution is the same.

  • Step 1: Deposit (or return) the contribution within 10 days of receipt.
  • Step 2: Seek evidence of its legality by making at least one written or oral request of the contributor within 30 days of receipt.
  • Step 3: If the committee cannot confirm that the contribution is permissible, it must refund the contribution within 30 days.
