Some Exempt Party Activities are Considered Federal Election Activity

October 6, 2014

Party committees conducting exempt activities during the next few weeks should be aware that -- while these activities are not subject to the limits on contributions or coordinated party expenditures -- they may qualify as "Federal Election Activity" (FEA). FEA that refers to a clearly identified federal candidate must be financed entirely with federal funds, and reportable FEA triggers a monthly filing requirement for the party committee. For more information, see this Record news article on FEA, the FEC's brochure on local party activity and Chapters 7 and 8 of the Campaign Guide for Political Party Committees.
