Hosting in-home events for candidates

December 4, 2017

An individual may spend up to $1,000 per candidate, per election for food, beverages, and invitations to host a campaign event that is held in the individual’s home, church, or community room without making a contribution. (Each individual living in the home is permitted a separate $1,000 allowance for in-home events.)  This is one example of a handful of specific exemptions in the federal campaign finance rules that allow individuals to offer valuable support to a campaign without it counting against their overall contribution limits. For more information on contribution exemptions and offering support to federal candidates, see our page on Volunteer Activity.
