FEC Corrects the Record Regarding Filing Extension
November 3, 2000
ADVISORY TO EDITORS, CORRESPONDENTS, BROADCASTERS
An e-mail currently making the rounds on the Internet concerning the Federal Election Commission extending Tuesday’s election day into Wednesday and Thursday is, obviously, a hoax and any attributions to FEC spokespersons in that e-mail are false.
This advisory is merely to reiterate that fact, and to direct correspondents to details on the law concerning the time for national elections, found in 3 U.S.C. 1, stipulating that "The time for appointing presidential Electors (and hence, for conducting presidential elections by today’s practice of appointing them by direct popular vote) was established in 1845 as being "on the Tuesday next after the first Monday in November, in every fourth year...".
The Federal Election Commission has no authority to establish or change election dates or times.
