FEC announces effective date for final rules on independent expenditures and electioneering communications by corporations and labor organizations (2015)

March 10, 2015

The Commission has announced an effective date of January 27, 2015, for revised rules that permit corporations and labor organizations to finance independent expenditures and electioneering communications. See 80 Fed. Reg. 12079 (March 6, 2015).

The Commission undertook the rulemaking in response to a Petition for Rulemaking filed by the James Madison Center for Free Speech, which asked the Commission to amend its regulations in response to the decision of the Supreme Court in Citizens United v. FEC, 558 U.S. 310 (2010). The revised regulations were summarized in the November 2014 Record.
