FEC AND IFES CO-HOST INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON SETTING GLOBAL POLITICAL FINANCE STANDARDS

Washington- The Federal Election Commission and IFES, a non-profit organization dedicated to building democratic societies, co-hosted an international conference, Setting Global Political Finance Standards, on Friday, March 30, 2007.  FEC Vice Chairman David Mason, FEC Commissioners Hans von Spakovsky and Ellen Weintraub and current IFES President Richard Soudriette and incoming IFES President Jean-Pierre Kingsley participated in the all-day event focused on administering and enforcing campaign finance laws.  The FEC and IFES welcomed the participation of Thomas Mann of The Brookings Institution, Marcin Walecki of IFES, Poland, Michael Pinto-Duschinsky of IFES, UK and Bruno Speck of Transparency International, Brazil.  The conference featured presentations by Marcin Walecki, Michael Pinto-Duschinsky and Bruno Speck, and moderated discussions centered on:

  • Balancing public disclosure and privacy issues;
  • Balancing issues related to comprehensive regulation and enforcement of violations; and
  • Establishing political finance systems in fragile democracies.

The FEC would like to thank all of the participants, representing over 20 countries, for making the Setting Global Political Finance Standards conference such a success.

Friday’s conference is part of a long standing outreach effort by the FEC to meet with election officials from around the world and to share the Commission’s experience and expertise in administering the campaign finance law.  The FEC routinely welcomes foreign election officials and visitors, who come to meet with Commissioners and agency staff to discuss issues related to campaign finance and disclosure.
