Contribution Limits in Special and Regular General Elections
In several cases this year, a special general election to fill a vacancy will be held on the same date as the regular general election to fill the office for the next term. In these circumstances, candidates have separate contribution limits for each election in which they participate. Therefore, an individual may contribute up to $2,400 for each election to candidates running in both a special and regular general election. Note, however, that campaigns must keep separate records for each of the elections, and must be sure to identify which election limit a contribution applies to when disclosing it on FEC reports. See 11 CFR 100.2, AO 1986-31 and the Campaign Guide for Congressional Candidates.
