BUCHANAN, GORE, KEYES AND LaROUCHE DECLARED ELIGIBLE

FOR PRIMARY MATCHING FUNDS IN 2000 RACE

WASHINGTON – The Federal Election Commission today certified Pat Buchanan, Al Gore, Alan Keyes, and Lyndon LaRouche eligible to receive federal matching funds for the 2000 presidential primary campaign. Buchanan and Keyes are seeking the Republican nomination, Gore and LaRouche, the Democratic nomination.

This brings the number of eligible candidates to nine. The dates the others were certified were as follows: Bill Bradley - March 25; Gary Bauer and Dan Quayle - May 27; John McCain - July 1; Dole - July 30.

To become eligible for matching funds, candidates must raise a threshold amount of $100,000 by collecting $5,000 in 20 different states in amounts of no more than $250 from any individual. Other requirements for eligibility include agreeing to an overall spending limit, abiding by spending limits in each state, using public funds only for legitimate campaign-related expenses, keeping financial records and permitting an extensive campaign audit.

Buchanan 2000, Inc. filed its threshold submission on September 7, 1999. The Gore 2000, Inc. submission was received on September 10; Keyes 2000, Inc. on September 20, and Larouche’s Committee for a New Bretton Woods on August 18.

Once certified eligible, campaigns may submit additional contributions for matching funds on the first business day of every month. The U.S. Treasury Department will pay the FEC-certified amounts beginning in January 2000. The maximum amount a candidate could receive is currently calculated to be $16.75 million.

Listed on the reverse side of this release are the qualifying states for each candidate certified eligible today.
