Commissioners and staff from the Federal Election Commission (FEC) will host a full day of in-depth training for candidate committees and political party committees. During the seminar, attendees will learn the federal campaign finance regulations relevant to federal candidates and their campaign committees or political party committees. Topics include fundraising, solicitations, reporting, making disbursements, federal election activity, communications and recent developments in campaign finance law. Workshops are designed for those seeking an introduction to the basic provisions of the law as well as for those more experienced in federal campaign finance rules. In-person attendance is limited, but virtual attendance is also available.

Registration information

Registrants may choose whether to attend in person or virtually. Those who are newer to federal campaign finance, or could benefit from a refresher, should plan to attend the Basics workshop, while those with more experience may choose to start the seminar with Committee Operations Part 1 at 11:00 a.m.

In-person attendance is limited and registration is accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Registrants will receive an emailed receipt from Pay.gov and a follow-up email from the Information Division with more information on your in-person or virtual attendance.

Seminar details

Intended audience

  • Treasurers and staff responsible for compliance with federal campaign finance laws for federal candidates, their campaign committees and political party committees
  • Attorneys, accountants and consultants for candidate and political party committees
  • Anyone who wants to gain in-depth knowledge of federal campaign finance law as it applies to these types of committees
  • Anyone who wants to learn about recent updates pertaining to campaign finance regulations, advisory opinions, litigation and enforcement

Choosing which workshops to attend

Assess your experience with federal campaign finance law. Beginners should register for the full day, which includes a Basics for Beginners session at 9:15 a.m. More experienced participants may choose to start the day with the first Committee Operations workshop at 11:00 a.m. Both candidate and party committee groups will be together for the Basics and Recent Developments sessions, and in break-out rooms for the Committee Operations trainings.

In-person attendance

After registration, in-person attendees will receive a personalized email with information on what to expect next and instructions for entering FEC headquarters. The FEC is located at 1050 First Street NE, in Washington, DC. It is near both the Union Station and NoMa-Gallaudet University stations on Metro's Red Line. Street parking in the area can be difficult, but there are some public lots in the area. The day of the seminar, attendees will be escorted from the building lobby to a security screening, and then on to the Commission Hearing Room for the seminar.

Virtual attendance

Virtual attendance is available via Zoom. Participants will be able to interact with presenters in real-time through Q&A, chat and poll functions. Virtual attendees will receive a personalized email with detailed instructions on how to access the seminar via Zoom.

Lunch and other refreshments

Coffee, juice and baked goods will be available during our mid-morning break, but lunch will not be provided. In-person attendees have several dining options. A list of carry-out and dine-in restaurants in the area will be provided. Alternatively, attendees may bring their lunch, store it in a designated refrigerator, and eat in an agency break room.

I'm with another type of committee, can I attend to this conference?

You may attend, but the content of this conference is not tailored to your type of organization. A Seminar for Seminar for Separate Segregated Funds will be held on Wednesday, September 27. CLE credits (or continuing education credits)

The FEC will provide all attendees a letter certifying participation in the seminar, including an agenda and staff bios, which attendees can use to apply independently for CLE or other credits. The FEC has not applied in any state to be an official CLE sponsor. However, past attendees have applied on their own and received continuing education credits for their attendance at FEC training events. Feel free to email conferences@fec.gov if need assistance with CLE credit.
