Reporting independent expenditures

September 8, 2026

If you make independent expenditures in connection with an upcoming election, you may trigger special reporting obligations. Political committees and other persons that make independent expenditures may have to disclose this activity within 24- or 48-hours of public distribution or dissemination based upon the date and amount of the expenditure. Detailed instructions are available on our reporting pages for PACs, parties, SSFs and other filers.

To learn more, please join us for the Commission’s September 16 Independent Expenditures and Pre-Election Communications Webinar. During the training, FEC staff will walk you through the federal campaign finance rules that apply to independent expenditures and other election-related communications, detail reporting scenarios and take your questions.
