 * A 1998 U.S. Court of Appeals ruling (Love, et al v. Foster and McKeithen; remanded from the U.S. Supreme Court) preserved all provisions of the Louisiana state election code with the exception of the provisions which establish the dates on which members of Congress are elected.  Therefore, in 2002, Congressional candidates did not participate in a primary election.  The Congressional general election date was November 5, 2002, with a runoff election scheduled for December 7, 2002, if necessary.

 # On October 25, 2002, Senator Wellstone died, creating a vacancy on the ballot under Minn. Stat. § 204B.41 (2000).  On October 31, 2002, the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party filed a nomination certificate naming Walter F. Mondale as the party’s nominee and county election officials began preparing official supplemental ballots with Mr. Mondale’s name in substitution for Senator Wellstone.  (Minnesota Supreme Court Order of October 31, 2002.)
