MID-YEAR HOUSE FUNDRAISING UP $25 MILLION FROM 97
WASHINGTON - Campaign finance reports filed with the Federal Election Commission covering the first six months of 1999 show 435 House incumbents reporting receipts of $77.9 million, a $25 million increase from the comparable period for incumbents in 1997. From January through June of this year, 223 Republicans reported raising $43.7 million, while 211 Democrats raised $34. 1 million.

Republican incumbents reported median receipts of $158,803 compared to $111,699 for Democrats. During the comparable period in 1997, Republicans reported
median receipts of $105,987 and Democrats raised $72,726. For the first six months in 1995, Republicans had median receipts of $110, 203 and Democrats $64,691.
Total receipts for the 23 Democratic freshmen and 17 Republican freshmen were significantly higher (on a per-candidate basis) than in previous cycles. Democrats raised $6.2 million and Republicans $4.7 million. Democratic freshmen had median receipts of $253,812, while the median for Republican freshmen was $256,609.
Non-incumbents raised a total of $14.1 million during the first six months of 1999, with 81 Democrats raising $6.9 million and 76 Republicans raising $7.2 million. In the comparable period in 1997, 39 Democrats raised $2.6 million and 43 Republicans raised $1.7 million. In 1995s first six months, 24 Democrats and 50 Republicans raised $1.6 million each.
