HOUSE FUNDRAISING AT MID-YEAR SEES INCUMBENT REPUBLICANS $9 MILLION AHEAD OF DEMOCRATS

WASHINGTON -- Campaign finance reports filed with the Federal Election Commission covering the first six months of 1997 show 435 House incumbents reporting receipts of $52.9 million, a $7.4 million increase from the comparable period for incumbents in 1995. From January through June of this year, 227 Republicans reported raising $30.8 million, while 207 Democrats raised $22.1 million.

Republican incumbents reported median receipts of $105,987 compared to $72,726 for Democrats. During the comparable period in 1995, Republicans reported median receipts of $110,203 and Democrats raised $64,691. From January - July in 1993, Republicans raised a median of $63,290 and Democrats $69,598.

Total receipts for the 42 Democratic freshmen and 32 Republican freshmen were similar, Democrats raising $5.0 million and Republicans $4.8 million. Democratic freshmen had median receipts of $115,228 while Republican freshmen median was $146,833.

Non-incumbents raised a total of $4.3 million during the first six months of 1997, with 39 Democrats raising $2.6 million and 43 Republicans raising $1.7 million. In the comparable period in 1995, 24 Democrats and 50 Republicans raised almost identical amounts of $1.6 million. In 1993's first six months, 44 Democrats raised only $0.4 million, while 78 Republicans raised $2.3 million.
