1. The column Independent Filing Deadline shows the date for the filing petitions by independent or third/minor party candidates. This is a general reference date for use by the public and voters. Candidates and others seeking specific information should contact the states for other deadlines that may need to be met. For example, the petitions may have to be checked by officials prior to this date. A declaration of candidacy may be due before the petitions are due. New parties may have different deadlines.

2. In Connecticut, nominating conventions are held by the parties prior to the primary. Democratic conventions: U.S. Senate, 7/14; U.S. House, 7/22. Republican conventions: U.S. Senate, 7/22; U.S. House Districts 1, 3, 4 and 5, 7/10; U.S. House District 2, 7/8; U.S. House District 6, 7/15.

3. In Texas, the Libertarian, Green, Natural Law and Reform party convention dates are: 6/10 for U.S. Senate, 3/18 for single and partial county districts, and 3/25 for multi-county districts.

4. In Utah, nominating conventions are held by the parties prior to the primary. Democratic and Republican conventions: 5/6. Independent American convention: 5/13. Libertarian convention: 5/20.

5. In Virginia, parties may choose to nominate candidates by convention rather than by primary. The Democratic convention date for U.S. House Districts 1, 5, 8, 9, 10 and 11 is 5/20. The Democratic convention date for U.S. House District 2 is 5/13, and the Democratic convention date for U.S. House District 7 is 6/12. (A Democratic nominating convention was not held for U.S. House District 6.) The Republican convention date for U.S. House Districts 3, 4 and 8 is 5/20. The Republican convention date for U.S. House Districts 5 and 6 is 5/13, and the Republican convention date for U.S. House District 9 is 5/27. Nominations for U.S. Senate and all other Congressional districts were made by primary election.
