Disclosure Data Weblog

Today we're releasing a new addition to the data catalog - financial summaries for campaigns and committees that give an overview of financial activity in each reporting period during the election cycle.  This means, for example, that it will be possible to see campaign receipts and spending during each quarter of the year.  For some PACs and parties you can download financial totals for each month (if they are required or choose to report monthly).

Using the Customize Data button you can retrieve data for just House and Senate campaigns or just Parties or just PACs or just Presidential campaigns.  You can also search for specific committees, isolate time periods, or limit the results to only committees that exceed a certain dollar amount in activity.

The data includes all of the summary financial information (e.g. itemized contributions from individuals, contributions from other committees, operating expenditures, contributions to other committees, etc.) for each reporting period.  This will help track changes in fundraising or spending during the course a campaign.

Comments:

I'd suggest adding an option under "Customize Data" to fiter by state and optionally district.

Now one must download the whole file with 17,000+ records before one can filter by state (field "sta").

And where is congressional district info in the downloaded fields?

It is possible to pull some of the districts by using the candidate ID field. The district in which the candidate originally filed is represented by the two numbers directly following the state abbreviation. You can isolate them by find replacing the first two digits in Word and then using text-to-columns to separate the last three digits. However, because of redistricting (mostly), some of the candidates end up in different district than they originally represented. In other words, a congressional district column would be incredibly helpful, and would seem to be a very simple addition.

Is there any change you have a similar file for 2007-08?
