EXPLANATION OF DATA
- Source: The results were obtained from the
official election office of each state, including the Office of
the Secretary of State, State Board of Elections, State Elections
Commission and the D.C. Board of Elections and Ethics. In some
cases, the official results were obtained from the Democratic
and Republican state parties. The assistance provided by the staff
of these offices in gathering this data is greatly appreciated.
- Terms: The terms used for each state in the
entry are the ones that appear on the tally of the official election
results.
- Candidate Name: The name of the candidate
is as reported by the source. The candidates are arranged by party
affiliation, with the winner of each party's primary election
listed first.
- Party: The party affiliation of the candidate.
The designation of a party label by a candidate may vary from
state to state due to differences in state law. The party label
listed is as reported by the source and may not necessarily represent
a political party organization. The abbreviations used to identify
the party labels that appeared on the various state ballots are:
D = Democratic; R = Republican; AIP = American Independent; G
= Green; I = Independent; LBT = Libertarian; LU = Liberty Union;
NL = Natural Law; PFP = Peace and Freedom; REF = Reform; UN =
Unaffiliated; W = Write-In.
- # of Votes: All valid votes cast for each
candidate. The totals for write-in votes are shown as disclosed
by the state. Some states list the names of candidates who received
write-in votes, while others provide a write-in vote total without
the names of the candidates who received the votes. Still other
states combine these two variations and provide the names of some
candidates who received write-in votes and a total of write-in
votes for all the other candidates.
- %: The percentage of votes received by each
candidate is based on the figure of total party votes in that
state. Due to the rounding of percentage numbers, some percentages
may not total 100%.
- Total Party Votes: All valid votes cast for
the candidates of one party in the election.
- Total State Votes: All valid votes cast for
all candidates in the election.
- Also on (date): Other states in which primary
elections were held on the same day, regardless of which parties
participated. Links to these election results pages are provided.
- The data is based on official figures provided by
state and party officials as of August 7, 1996.
